Samvatsara and month
Jaya (No. 28, “success, conquest”) — A year of success: income, acquisitions, affairs brought to a happy end. more
Northern samvatsara: Kilaka. Shaka Samvat 1996, Vikram Samvat 2131, Kali Yuga 5175.
Magha (Tapas) — A month of austerity and holy baths (Magha Snana): Vasant Panchami, Ratha Saptami; in the dark half — Maha Shivaratri. more
Phalguna (Tapasya) — The last month of the lunar year: Holika Dahan and Holi; Mina Sankranti begins the second Kharmas. more
Amanta — reckoning lunar months from new moon to new moon (South and West India; this calendar shows months this way). Purnimanta — reckoning from full moon to full moon (North India): the bright half of the month (Shukla Paksha) bears the same name in both systems, while the dark half (Krishna Paksha) in purnimanta already belongs to the next month. So, for example, Krishna Janmashtami is “Shravana, Krishna 8” in amanta and “Bhadrapada, Krishna 8” in purnimanta: it is one and the same day.
Times are standard time UTC+3 (from the site settings, without daylight saving time) · panchanga at sunrise (upper limb of the Sun’s disc, with refraction) · ayanamsa Lahiri · place 55°45′ N 37°35′ E · festival dates are calculated for this location by the rules of kala vyapti · times of Sankranti are accurate to within a few minutes

Effects of a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: Ashlesha — physical affliction (suffering); Friday — universal respect.
Cautions:
- Krishna Paksha: according to the Kalaprakashika, a haircut during the waning Moon affects life (longevity) and fortune, but the first five tithis of Krishna Paksha are favourable; hair grows thicker if cut during the waxing Moon (M. V. Ramakrishnan, as quoted by B. V. Raman).
- Friday: B. V. Raman advises against cutting nails (the rating above is the site’s summary, which uses the same weekdays for nails as for haircuts, so Friday counts as auspicious).

| Cutting fingernails, cutting toenails | no suitable window — see the prohibitions below |
| Bathing, washing hair | average 08:17–08:40, 08:44–17:10 |
Haircut factors: weekday Monday; nakshatra Purva-Phalguni until 08:44, Uttara-Phalguni from 08:44; tithi Krishna-tritya until 08:38, Krishna-chaturti from 08:38; lagna Makara 08:17, Kumbha 08:40, Mina 09:24, Mesha 10:05, Vrishabha 10:59, Mithuna 12:31, Karka 14:59
Effects of a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: Purva-Phalguni (until 08:44) — ill health; Uttara-Phalguni (from 08:44) — destruction of all diseases; Monday — clear, bright complexion.
Prohibitions of the day — their times are excluded from the windows for haircuts, shaving and nail cutting:
- Krishna-chaturti 08:38–17:10: a Rikta tithi — haircuts and shaving are not advised (according to the Muhurta Chintamani and the Kalaprakashika).
- Bhadra on earth 08:17–08:38: no shaving or haircuts during Vishti Karana (according to the Muhurta Chintamani, Bhadra does harm when it is on earth; in heaven and in the netherworld its influence on earth is weak).
Cautions:
- The Muhurta Chintamani warns: whoever shaves in Uttara-Phalguni nakshatra 4 times a year puts their life in danger — frequent haircuts in this nakshatra are best avoided.
V. Raman).
- Monday: according to the Kalaprakashika, it is good for a haircut only during the waxing Moon.

Festivals and periods
Kalashtami · Kalabhairava
The eighth day of the waning Moon is dedicated to Kalabhairava, the fierce form of Shiva. The day is chosen so that Ashtami prevails at the beginning of the night (Pradosha). Devotees fast, worship Bhairava in the evening and at night, and feed dogs — the dog is his mount.
Rule: pradosha vyapini: 3 muhurtas after sunset, 17:18–20:16

Cautions:

- Friday: B. V. Raman advises against cutting nails (the rating above is the site’s summary, which uses the same weekdays for nails as for haircuts, so Friday counts as auspicious).

Effects of a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: Anuradha — loss of money. In general Anuradha is favourable, but not for the very first shaving, cutting or trimming of hair (“vapanam”); Saturday — decline of physical strength.
Prohibitions of the day — their times are excluded from the windows for haircuts, shaving and nail cutting:
- Krishna-navami 08:07–17:20: a Rikta tithi — haircuts and shaving are not advised (according to the Muhurta Chintamani and the Kalaprakashika).
Cautions:
- The Muhurta Chintamani warns: whoever shaves in Anuradha nakshatra 3 times a year puts their life in danger — frequent haircuts in this nakshatra are best avoided.
V. Raman).

|---|---|
| Cutting fingernails, cutting toenails | average 07:37–09:49 |
| Bathing, washing hair | good 08:13–08:55 |
Haircut factors: weekday Friday; nakshatra Krittika; tithi Shukla-saptami until 09:49, Shukla-ashtami from 09:49; lagna Kumbha 07:37, Mina 08:13, Mesha 08:55, Vrishabha 09:49, Mithuna 11:20, Karka 13:48, Simha 16:47
Effects of a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: Krittika — consumption (a wasting disease); Friday — universal respect.
Prohibitions of the day — their times are excluded from the windows for haircuts, shaving and nail cutting:
- Shukla-ashtami 09:49–17:49: a Parva tithi — haircuts and shaving are postponed (according to the Muhurta Chintamani).
Cautions:
- The Muhurta Chintamani warns: whoever shaves in Krittika nakshatra 6 times a year puts their life in danger — frequent haircuts in this nakshatra are best avoided.
- Friday: B. V. Raman advises against cutting nails (the rating above is the site’s summary, which uses the same weekdays for nails as for haircuts, so Friday counts as auspicious).

Practice day: A special day for fasting, puja and spiritual practice (Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya, Shivaratri, Sankranti, a festival). The cell colour does not change.
Patron: Madhava; Aditya — Pushan. Full moon in nakshatra Magha. Ritu: Shishira.
Northern samvatsara: Kilaka (No. 42)
Shaka Samvat 1996 · Vikram Samvat 2131 · Kali Yuga 5175
Next year — Manmatha, from the new moon before Ugadi (the start of Chaitra) 16.03.2075
In South India (Shaka Samvat, lunar reckoning) the years of the 60-year cycle follow one another without a break, and the name of the year changes at Ugadi — at the start of Chaitra, on the first tithi of the bright half.
Group: Nanda. Deity: Brahma.
The ruler of the first day of the waning moon is Brahma. This time is suitable for all types of ceremonies.
Meaning: Wrapping around (like a snake), hugging
Symbol: Curled snake
Deity: Naga - the lord of snakes (Sharpa)
Type: sharp (tikshna, daruna) — For drastic actions: surgery, severing ties, taming, exorcism, fighting diseases and enemies; unsuitable for other auspicious undertakings (the exception is weddings: Mula is among the nakshatras for marriage).
Vimshottari lord: Mercury
Shakti: cause suffering with poison, paralyze
Auspicious: health and healing, long-term matters and anything meant to last a long time.
A nitya yoga is one of the 27 segments of the sum of the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and the Moon (each spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes of arc). Nine yogas are inauspicious: Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Parigha and especially Vyatipata and Vaidhriti; the rest are auspicious.
Deity: Brahma
Auspicious: religious rites, study, spiritual and charitable work.
A karana is half a tithi; there are 60 of them in a lunar month.
Lord: Venus
All manifestations of beauty and harmony find their support and development on this day, therefore, most worldly and spiritual affairs that do not rely on brute force are good to begin or implement at this time. The day is especially good for marriage, hiring workers, building relationships, creativity, music, singing, dancing, poetry and holding holidays or performances, it is best to schedule a romantic date at this time - it will add additional shine to decorations and a special aroma to flowers, and tact to the owners of all this.
Start of morning civil twilight: the Sun is 6° below the horizon and the sky grows light.
Appearance of the upper limb of the solar disc, with refraction. The Vedic day and the vara begin at sunrise.
True noon — the culmination of the Sun, midway between sunrise and sunset.
The upper limb of the solar disc disappears below the horizon (with refraction).
End of evening civil twilight: the Sun is 6° below the horizon.
Appearance of the upper limb of the lunar disc above the horizon. The decisive time for Sankashti Chaturthi and Karwa Chauth.
The upper limb of the lunar disc disappears below the horizon.
Garden tasks are rated as in the site’s “Lunar calendar for gardeners” section: the weekday, nakshatra and tithi are taken into account; starting from a base score of 3, each factor adds one point if favourable or subtracts one if unfavourable; total score 0–6: 0–2 — bad, 3–4 — average, 5–6 — good. The table shows the rating at sunrise and after each change of nakshatra or tithi during the daytime (“from HH:MM”); the icons next to the sunrise rating show the contribution of the weekday, nakshatra and tithi at sunrise: “+” (green) adds one point, “0” (yellow) has no effect, “–” (red) subtracts one.
The ratings are the site author’s summary of the Indian and Tibetan traditions. Classical texts on agriculture: the Kalaprakashika (ch. XIX–XX, English translation by N. P. Subramania Iyer, 1917), B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha (ch. XIII), the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (ch. 55).
what to do (Tibetan tradition): planting flowers and trees; digging the ground is not very favorable; do not prune and the like
plants of the day: flowers, ornamental plants
nakshatra Ashlesha
For pruning and uprooting; plowing and watering are allowed, but nothing else.
Krishna-pratipat
digging, plowing, planting trees
An auspicious combination of weekday and tithi group: Fri — Nanda (1, 6, 11), Wed — Bhadra (2, 7, 12), Tue — Jaya (3, 8, 13), Sat — Rikta (4, 9, 14), Thu — Purna (5, 10, 15). Brings success; if the same pair also forms an inauspicious yoga, Siddha prevails.
One of the 28 yogas formed jointly by the weekday and the Moon’s nakshatra (counting Abhijit): from the starting nakshatra of the day (Sun — Ashwini, Mon — Mrigashirsha, Tue — Ashlesha, Wed — Hasta, Thu — Anuradha, Fri — Uttara Ashadha, Sat — Shatabhisha) the cycle runs Ananda, Kaladanda, Dhumra and so on. Auspicious yogas support the day’s affairs; inauspicious ones (especially Utpata, Mrityu and Kana) weaken them.

Auspicious yogas support the day’s affairs; inauspicious ones (especially Utpata, Mrityu and Kana) weaken them.
“Deadly” combination of weekday and tithi group: Sun and Tue — Nanda (1, 6, 11), Mon and Fri — Bhadra (2, 7, 12), Wed — Jaya (3, 8, 13), Thu — Rikta (4, 9, 14), Sat — Purna (5, 10, 15). Portends failure for new undertakings.
The knotted junction of “water” and “fire”: the last pada of Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati and the first pada of Magha, Mula and Ashwini (as well as the tithi junctions of the 5th and 6th, the 10th and 11th, the 15th and 1st). Unfavourable for new undertakings.
The Moon in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati — the nakshatras at the junctions of signs. For those born in them, tradition prescribes a pacifying rite; new undertakings call for caution.
The penultimate, 14th muhurta of the night: it begins about an hour and a half before sunrise and lasts about 48 minutes. The best time for meditation, prayer, japa and study.
The 8th of the 15 daytime muhurtas, around true noon (about 48 minutes). The “invincible” time, suitable for almost any new undertaking — except on Wednesdays.
The 11th daytime muhurta, the “time of victory”: good for journeys, contests and decisive action; the main time of Vijayadashami.
“Dust from the hooves” — about 24 minutes right after sunset, when the cows return from pasture. An auspicious time for weddings and evening rites.
The first fifth of the night after sunset (three night muhurtas, about 2.5 hours). The time for worshipping Shiva, lighting the Diwali diyas and performing Holika Dahan.
Midnight — the 8th muhurta of the night. The decisive time for Maha Shivaratri, Krishna Janmashtami and Kali Puja.
“Time of nectar” — about an hour and a half within each nakshatra, favourable for any new undertaking and mitigating inauspicious factors.
One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Rahu (a different segment for each weekday). No new work, journeys or deals are started; whatever was begun earlier may be continued.
How it is calculated: following the South Indian tradition (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), as Drik Panchang does — the daytime from sunrise to sunset (upper limb of the disc, with refraction) is divided into 8 parts, and Rahu Kalam is part 4 (Mon 2, Sat 3, Fri 4, Wed 5, Thu 6, Tue 7, Sun 8).
Another tradition — Kala Vela: the eighth parts of the daytime belong to the planets in weekday order starting from the lord of the day, while the eighth part, the last before sunset, is “empty”, without a lord; in this tradition it is given to Rahu — today {y} (on Sundays it coincides with the calculation above).
Yet another tradition — printed panchangas: a nominal day of 6:00–18:00, so Rahu Kalam always falls at the same clock time — today 10:30–12:00; if the nominal 6:00–18:00 day is counted in local mean time — 10:59–12:29 by the clock. Far from India this is a rough approximation.
Using the rising and setting of the centre of the disc without refraction (old Siddhantic panchangas): {x}.
At night Rahu Kalam is usually not reckoned (the translator of the Kalaprakashika, 1917: “it occurs only in the daytime”); a few divide the night into 8 parts as well, but there is no generally accepted order of the night parts. In North India, Choghadiya is more often consulted to choose the hour.
One-eighth of the daytime associated with Yama: unfavourable for new undertakings and journeys.
How it is calculated: the eighths of the daytime belong to the planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day; Yamaganda (Yamaghantaka) is Jupiter’s portion, today part 7. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 15:00–16:30.
One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Gulika (the son of Saturn). Whatever is begun at this time tends to repeat, so funerals are not held and loans are not taken during Gulika; important new undertakings are usually avoided.
How it is calculated: Saturn’s portion among the eighths of the daytime (planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day), today part 2. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 07:30–09:00. According to a note by the translator of the Kalaprakashika, Gulika is not considered inauspicious: it is even good for reaping, gathering grain, trade, medical treatment, repaying debts and a number of other activities; the view that whatever is begun during Gulika will repeat itself is a popular (mainly Tamil) belief.
An inauspicious muhurta (about 48 minutes) — one or two per day, specific to each weekday. It is avoided for new undertakings, journeys and deals.
“Rejected” time — about an hour and a half within each nakshatra (4 ghatis of 60, starting from a ghati specific to that nakshatra). Unfavourable for new undertakings.
B. V. Raman: nails are not cut on Friday or Saturday, on Ashtami, Navami or Chaturdashi, or on new moon and full moon days.
B. V. Raman: nails are not cut on Friday or Saturday, on Ashtami, Navami or Chaturdashi, or on new moon and full moon days.
Weekdays for a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: auspicious — Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; avoided — Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday (Sunday is permitted for Brahmins, Tuesday for Kshatriyas, Saturday for Vaishyas and others); Monday is good only during the waxing Moon.
+1 — favourable for a haircut
−1 — unfavourable for a haircut
Nakshatras for a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: auspicious — Ashwini, Mrigashirsha, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Revati; fairly good — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Swati, Uttara Ashadha, Shatabhisha and Uttara Bhadrapada; the rest are avoided.
−1 — unfavourable for a haircut
Tithis for a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: auspicious — the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th; avoided — the 1st, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 14th, full moon and new moon; in Krishna Paksha the first five tithis are permitted (according to some, the first seven).

Lagna for a haircut according to the Kalaprakashika: auspicious signs — Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Kanya, Tula, Makara and Mina; avoided — Mesha, Simha, Vrischika, Dhanu and Kumbha (all except Kumbha are permitted if a benefic occupies the sign or benefics aspect it).
Mesha (Aries) — “great calamities”; Simha (Leo) — “disease and suffering”; Vrischika (Scorpio) — “disease and suffering”; Dhanu (Sagittarius) — “fear of the authorities”; Kumbha (Aquarius) — “ruin of the family”.
Classical rules: have a haircut or shave in the daytime, preferably before noon — not at night or at twilight; not after eating, bathing or anointing the body with oil; not on the day of setting out on a journey; not when one’s wife is pregnant; not on one’s birth nakshatra or the 10th and 19th nakshatras from it, and not during Chandrashtama (the Moon in the 8th sign from the natal Moon). These prohibitions are lifted for a wedding, an initiation, release from prison, mourning for one’s parents and at the ruler’s command.
Sources: the Kalaprakashika of Narasimha (ch. V on haircuts — written about a child’s first haircut, chaula; English translation by N. P. Subramania Iyer, 1917), the Muhurta Chintamani of Rama Daivajna, B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha. The rating is the site’s summary, as in the “Lunar haircut calendar”: starting from a base score of 4, each factor — weekday, nakshatra, tithi and lagna — adds one point if favourable or subtracts one if unfavourable; total score 0–8: 7–8 good, 4–6 average, 0–3 bad. Windows are the parts of the daytime with the best rating (at least 15 minutes long); for haircuts, shaving and nail cutting, the times of the day’s prohibitions are excluded.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday — the days of the gentle (saumya) planets: the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
A tithi favourable for new undertakings: in the bright half of the month — the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th, in the dark half — the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th.
The Moon in an ugra or tikshna nakshatra: a time for harsh deeds, not for auspicious undertakings.
Group: Bhadra. Deity: Vidhatr.
Patronizes the second day of the waning Moon - Vidhatr. This period is suitable for all matters designed for development and long-term preservation, for example, for laying the foundations of buildings.
Meaning: Powerful, sufficient
Symbol: Throne, palanquin, royal canopy
Deity: Pitris or Pitars - ancestors of the clan, forefathers
Type: fierce (ugra, krura) — For destructive and dangerous tasks: demolition, work with fire and weapons, disputes; unsuitable for other auspicious undertakings (the exception is weddings: Magha is among the nakshatras for marriage).
Vimshottari lord: Ketu
Shakti: leave the body (temporarily or completely), give transformation similar to death
Auspicious: weddings and family matters, anything meant to bring good fortune and well-being.
Deity: Aryaman
Auspicious: dealings with authorities and superiors, fame, home and housing, clothing and jewellery.
A karana is half a tithi; there are 60 of them in a lunar month.
Lord: Saturn
This is the only day of the week when, according to astrological indications, you can safely postpone most important household and spiritual affairs, which is reflected in a variety of cultures around the world. However, on this day you can carry out monotonous monotonous work, or relax.
what to do (Tibetan tradition): working in the field, planting flowers and trees, sowing, making a pond and a well; do not plow
plants of the day: slow-growing, long-lived, dense, heavy, sturdy plants
nakshatra Magha
For pruning and uprooting, but not for anything else.

One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Rahu (a different segment for each weekday). No new work, journeys or deals are started; whatever was begun earlier may be continued.
How it is calculated: following the South Indian tradition (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), as Drik Panchang does — the daytime from sunrise to sunset (upper limb of the disc, with refraction) is divided into 8 parts, and Rahu Kalam is part 3 (Mon 2, Sat 3, Fri 4, Wed 5, Thu 6, Tue 7, Sun 8).
Yet another tradition — printed panchangas: a nominal day of 6:00–18:00, so Rahu Kalam always falls at the same clock time — today 09:00–10:30; if the nominal 6:00–18:00 day is counted in local mean time — 09:29–10:59 by the clock.
How it is calculated: the eighths of the daytime belong to the planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day; Yamaganda (Yamaghantaka) is Jupiter’s portion, today part 6. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 13:30–15:00.
One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Gulika (the son of Saturn). Whatever is begun at this time tends to repeat, so funerals are not held and loans are not taken during Gulika; important new undertakings are usually avoided.
How it is calculated: Saturn’s portion among the eighths of the daytime (planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day), today part 1. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 06:00–07:30.

One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Rahu (a different segment for each weekday). No new work, journeys or deals are started; whatever was begun earlier may be continued.
How it is calculated: following the South Indian tradition (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), as Drik Panchang does — the daytime from sunrise to sunset (upper limb of the disc, with refraction) is divided into 8 parts, and Rahu Kalam is part 6 (Mon 2, Sat 3, Fri 4, Wed 5, Thu 6, Tue 7, Sun 8).
Yet another tradition — printed panchangas: a nominal day of 6:00–18:00, so Rahu Kalam always falls at the same clock time — today 13:30–15:00; if the nominal 6:00–18:00 day is counted in local mean time — 13:59–15:29 by the clock.
How it is calculated: the eighths of the daytime belong to the planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day; Yamaganda (Yamaghantaka) is Jupiter’s portion, today part 1. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 06:00–07:30.
One-eighth of the daytime ruled by Gulika (the son of Saturn). Whatever is begun at this time tends to repeat, so funerals are not held and loans are not taken during Gulika; important new undertakings are usually avoided.
How it is calculated: Saturn’s portion among the eighths of the daytime (planets in weekday order, starting from the lord of the day), today part 3. According to the printed tables (nominal day 6:00–18:00) — 09:00–10:30.
